Wild Turkey traces its roots back to 1940 in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, when a distillery executive shared a barrel of high-proof bourbon with friends on a wild turkey hunting trip. The bourbon was so well received that it became known simply as Wild Turkey, and the name was adopted commercially soon after.
The brand rose to prominence for producing full-flavoured, higher-proof bourbons that stayed true to traditional Kentucky methods. Central to its identity is a high rye mash bill, long fermentation, and maturation in deeply charred American oak barrels, creating bold structure and spice.
Wild Turkey’s reputation was cemented under the stewardship of Jimmy Russell, who joined the distillery in 1954 and became one of the longest-serving master distillers in bourbon history.
