Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin is a small batch craft gin distilled in the heart of Germany’s Black Forest. It brings together an impressive blend of 47 botanicals sourced from around the world and from the region itself. The result is a complex and vibrant spirit known for its depth, freshness and character. Nose: Bright and aromatic with fresh juniper, citrus zest and a burst of wild berries. Underneath sits a layer of pine, lavender and subtle forest herbs that give it a clean but complex lift.
Palate: Crisp and lively at first with lemon peel and juniper leading the way. It then opens into deeper notes of berry, floral sweetness and warm spices. The mix of herbs and pine gives it a distinctive Black Forest character that feels both elegant and bold.

Monkey 47 traces its origins back to a remarkable man: Montgomery “Monty” Collins, a British Royal Air Force officer who was stationed in Berlin after the Second World War. Collins later moved to Germany’s Black Forest region, where he fell in love with local botanicals, traditional distillation techniques, and a mischievous monkey he sponsored at the Berlin Zoo named Max.
Inspired by British gin heritage and the natural richness of the Black Forest, Collins developed a unique recipe combining 47 botanicals with pure forest spring water. His early homemade spirit became a local curiosity but was largely forgotten for decades.
In the 2000s, the recipe was rediscovered and revived by Alexander Stein, who rebuilt the brand with obsessive attention to detail. Stein partnered with distiller Christoph Keller, who brought Collins’ concept to life as a modern craft gin. Using hand-peeled botanicals, slow maceration, and traditional distillation, they created an exceptionally complex gin that captured global attention.
Released as Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin, it quickly earned a reputation for depth, character and premium craftsmanship. Today it stands as one of the leading ultra-premium gins in the world, known for its aromatic complexity, small batch production, and playful yet historic identity rooted in the Black Forest.
