Lagavulin Distillery was officially founded in 1816 on the south coast of Islay, though whisky was made around Lagavulin Bay long before that. It rose to prominence under Sir Peter Mackie in the late 1800s, who used Lagavulin in his famous White Horse blend and briefly operated the legendary Malt Mill distillery next door. The release of Lagavulin 16 Year Old in 1988 as part of the Classic Malts range solidified its global reputation. Today, Lagavulin is celebrated for its rich, smoky single malts and remains one of Islay’s most iconic and historically significant distilleries.
