Cardhu Distillery
Cardhu Distillery is one of the most historic distilleries in Speyside and holds a unique place in Scotch whisky history. Its origins date back to 1811, when John and Helen Cumming began illicit distilling on their farm near the River Spey. Helen Cumming became a key figure in the distillery’s early success, famously warning neighbouring distillers of approaching excise officers and helping establish Cardhu’s reputation for quality spirit.
Cardhu was officially licensed in 1824, making it one of the earliest legal distilleries in the region. As demand grew, the distillery expanded throughout the 19th century, eventually becoming a cornerstone malt for early blended Scotch whiskies. Its smooth and honeyed character made it particularly important to the development of blends such as Johnnie Walker, a relationship that continues today.
Now part of Diageo’s Speyside portfolio, Cardhu remains known for its gentle, elegant style. Its whiskies are appreciated for their approachability and balance, making Cardhu a classic introduction to Speyside single malt while still offering depth and heritage rooted in over two centuries of Scotch whisky tradition.
