Angostura Aromatic Bitters
Angostura Aromatic Bitters traces its origins back to 1824, when it was first created by German physician Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert. Originally developed as a medicinal tonic, the bitters were formulated to aid digestion and improve the health of sailors suffering from tropical ailments while stationed in Angostura, a port town in present-day Venezuela. The name “Angostura” was retained even after production later moved.
By the mid-19th century, the bitters had gained international recognition for their complex blend of herbs and spices, becoming a staple in bars across Europe and North America. Production was eventually relocated to Trinidad and Tobago, where it remains today under the stewardship of Angostura.
Angostura Aromatic Bitters is distinguished by its closely guarded recipe, iconic oversized label, and unmistakable aromatic profile. Over nearly two centuries, it has become an essential ingredient in classic cocktails such as the Old Fashioned and Manhattan, while continuing to inspire modern mixology. Today, Angostura remains a symbol of tradition, craftsmanship, and consistency, trusted by professional bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts worldwide.
