Angostura Aromatic Bitters traces its origins back to 1824, when it was first created by German physician Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert. Originally developed as a medicinal tonic, the bitters were formulated to aid digestion and improve the health of sailors suffering from tropical ailments while stationed in Angostura, a port town in present-day Venezuela. The name “Angostura” was retained even after production later moved.
By the mid-19th century, the bitters had gained international recognition for their complex blend of herbs and spices, becoming a staple in bars across Europe and North America. Production was eventually relocated to Trinidad and Tobago, where it remains today under the stewardship of Angostura.
